The intended function and application, key interfaces, and constraints on dimensions, power and environment. A target unit cost or quantity range helps select appropriate approaches. Existing sketches or component ideas are useful but are not required for an initial inquiry.
The agreed boundary
We consider one device concept or function and define the decision, options and depth of investigation in the proposal. The study includes technical research and concept work. Building and measuring a demonstrator is a separate work package.
A recommendation to change the idea or test a critical assumption first is a valid outcome. You receive a decision basis with explicit limitations.
